This is a big deal because BMI takes care of paying songwriters, like Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar, when their music is played on the radio or streamed online. The details of the sale aren't out yet, but it's making songwriters wonder if they'll still get paid the same way. BMI used to work as a nonprofit, but now they're switching to a for-profit model. That means they might start focusing more on making money rather than just helping songwriters. The new owners want to update how BMI works, but there are rules from the government that might limit what they can do.
